Vineyards in Grande Champagne, 1st cru of Cognac

Cognac is an AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) eau-de-vie, which can only be produced in a very specific geographical area. Six crus have been delimited following the decree of May 1st 1909 established on the basis of the research of the geologist Henri Coquand in 1860.

Guillon-Painturaud is located in Segonzac at the heart of the Grande Champagne region, in the most prestigious cru of Cognac.

Our vineyard is located at the heart of the Grande Champagne, 1st cru of Cognac

A unique vineyard in the region !

The Grande Champagne cru has more than 13,200 hectares of vines and represents 17% of the Cognac production.
This cru is located exclusively in the Charente department.

Our vineyard covers 19 hectares. It is located less than 500 metres from our house. This proximity allows us to keep a very close eye on our vines and the maturity of our grapes during the harvest.

The characteristics of our vineyard in Grande Champagne

The eaux-de-vie produced in Grande Champagne can also be blended into a "Fine Champagne". Indeed, the name "Fine Champagne" designates a blend of eaux-de-vie from the Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne vineyards. For the "Fine Champagne Contrôlée" designation, the proportion of Grande Champagne must be equal to or greater than 50% of the final blend.

Our vineyard benefits from a Grande Champagne soil clay and limestone. This soil allows the vines to draw their nutrients from deep within the soil regardless of the season.

This typical characteristic of this soil offers a double benefit for our Cognacs :

On the one hand, it allows us to create floral eaux-de-vie, all in finesse with a great aromatic richness.

On the other hand, we can produce very old Cognacs with notes of rancio due to their superior ageing potential compared to other crus.

The grapes used for our cognacs and pineaux

The Ugni Blanc is the main grape variety for making our Cognacs. It makes up 98% of the Charente vineyard.

Its acidity is perfect for developing all the aromas sought during distillation.

For our Pineaux, each colour has its own grape variety :

We favour a blend of 50% Semillion and Ugni Blanc for the White Pineau.

The Cabernet Franc and Merlot are excellent for our Rosé Pineau.

Biodiversity and our vineyard

Since 2014, we are certified HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale). This certification underlines our long-term commitment to the protection of an exceptional terroir, which it is our duty to preserve.

Biodiversity is one of our priorities, we always cultivate our vines with respect for our environment in order to stay in harmony with the ecosystems that surround us.

Our vines are precious and also need good weather conditions to thrive. Click here to find out more!
