The origins of Cognac
The history of cognac dates back to the 16th century, when Dutch merchants were looking for a way to preserve French wine during their exports. To prevent it from deteriorating during the journey, they decided to distill it. Thus was born wine brandy, which over time was aged in oak barrels and developed its distinctive aromas. It was in the Cognac region of the Charente that this process was perfected, giving birth to the famous spirit we know today.
Cognac recognition
In the 17th century, distillation improved and local producers began to refine their techniques. The advent of double distillation produced a more refined and complex-tasting product. Cognac soon acquired an international reputation, attracting English and Dutch merchants.
In the 19th century, cognac became an "appellation contrôlée", with strict regulations governing its production. This recognition guaranteed exceptional quality and strengthened cognac's reputation on world markets.

Emblematic names such as Hennessy, Rémy Martin, Martell and Courvoisier have played a key role in the popularization of cognac. Protected by an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), it must be produced according to precise rules, notably with regard to the grape varieties used (mainly ugni blanc), distillation in Charentais stills and ageing in oak barrels for at least two years.
Thanks to its prestige and history, cognac continues to appeal to a discerning public around the world, from connoisseurs to lovers of new taste experiences. It is also a staple of the luxury and gourmet markets, reinforcing its status as a timeless icon of French know-how.

The Guillon-Painturaud estate: its origins
As far as our estate is concerned, it all began in... 1610!
Initially weavers, the members of the Guillon Painturaud family gradually began to farm their vineyards. It was in 1914 that they decided to start distilling, and this was the beginning of a love affair between the family and the know-how they hold so dear.
