Where does Mother's Day come from?
Well, the first Mother's Day in France dates back to... 1906! So this tradition has existed in France for over a century.
Around the world, although the first origins can be traced back to religious ceremonies and celebrations, it was in 1870 that the first Mother's Day was proclaimed in the United States. A peace activist invited all the world's mothers to unite for a more peaceful world. A few years later, at the beginning of the 20th century, Anna Jarvis founded the ‘Mothers’ Club’ and in 1912, she created the International Mother's Day Association. It was thanks to her that an official Mother's Day was declared in 1914.
In France, it's the small village of Artas in Isère that can claim to be the creator of Mother's Day. As early as 1906, Prosper Roche, founder of the Union Fraternelle des Pères de Famille Méritants d'Artas, organised a festive ceremony in honour of mothers and awarded a Haut mérite maternel prize to two mothers of 9 children. Since then, Mothers' Day has become a tradition, celebrated every year on the last Sunday in May.
On this day, mothers take centre stage and all we want to do is pamper them! Looking for a change from the traditional bouquet of flowers? Here are some ideas based around cognac and pineau des charentes to please and surprise her!

Mother's Day gift idea: pamper her with a cognac
Yes, women drink spirits and cognac too! Elise and Mathilde, the two sisters at the head of Guillon-Painturaud, are committed to producing quality cognacs that are accessible. By accessible, we mean cognacs that are light and delicate. Neither too spicy nor too powerful, their cognacs are highly aromatic, light and easy to drink.
Our recommendation? XO Old Reserve cognac
At least 10 years old, this XO Old Reserve cognac is characterised by its fresh, floral notes. It has an intense aromatic bouquet and a long finish. A bouquet of flowers, but in a bottle!
This cognac can be enjoyed neat as an aperitif or as an after-dinner drink. It is also a perfect accompaniment to desserts such as crème brûlée or fruit tarts.
It's the perfect tasting experience!
Mother's Day gift idea: pamper her with a Pineau des Charentes
If your mum prefers milder, lighter drinks, you can opt for a Pineau des Charentes! This drink, made from grape juice and brandy, is very tasty and traditionally known as an aperitif!
Our idea for pleasing her? Extra Old Pineau rosé
Made from Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes, this wine is at least 12 years old and has had time to develop complex aromas in barrel. It has notes of strawberry jam and very long, persistent aromas. While we see a lot of white pineau, rosé pineau is rarer, and even rarer at this age!
This very old pineau rosé can be enjoyed as an aperitif, or even after a meal as a gourmet treat! It also goes perfectly with chocolate desserts.
A tasty treat!
Mother's Day gift idea: pamper her with an original activity
Your mum lives near the Charente and you don't know what to get her? Why not opt for an original activity?
At Domaine Guillon-Painturaud, we offer a year-round workshop on Pineau. This workshop takes place in the wine cellar and consists of making your own blend of Pineau des Charentes. You have 3 vintage in front of you, so all you have to do is blend them to your taste and create your own recipe! As the icing on the cake, your mum will go home with her creation, a 50cl bottle of white or rosé Pineau.
An original and unique experience in the Charente to offer your mum in the form of a gift card!
