How to store a bottle of cognac?
Cognac is a refined spirit that deserves to be stored in the best possible conditions in order to preserve its aromas et sa qualité. Contrairement au vin, le cognac ne vieillit plus une fois mis en bouteille. Mais une mauvaise conservation peut altérer son goût et son caractère. Voici nos conseils pour bien conserver votre bouteille de cognac et en apprécier tous ses arômes !
How to store cognac properly
- Choose a suitable location
Cognac should be stored in a dry place, away from direct light and temperature variations. A cellar protected from humidity or a closed cupboard are ideal choices.
- Avoid temperature variations
Temperature variations can alter the quality of cognac. Ideally, it should be stored at a constant temperature, between 15 and 20°C. Temperatures that are too high accelerate alcohol evaporation. Temperatures that are too cool, on the other hand, can adversely affect the balance of aromas.
- Protect the bottle from light
Prolonged exposure to light, particularly sunlight, can alter cognac's aromas and color. For optimum preservation, it is best to keep the bottle in its original packaging, or to store it in a dark place.
- Keep bottle upright
Unlike wine, a bottle of cognac must be stored upright! The alcohol can attack the cork if the bottle is laid down for too long, altering the taste of the cognac.
- Close the bottle tightly after each use
Prolonged contact with air can oxidize cognac and alter its aromas. To avoid this, be sure to reseal the bottle after each use. If you have an unopened bottle, you can use an airtight cap to limit contact with oxygen.
- What to do if the bottle level drops?
If your bottle has been opened and less than half the contents remain, contact with oxygen can gradually alter the taste of the cognac. One tip is to decant the cognac into a smaller bottle. This will limit the amount of air present.
- Can I keep a bottle of cognac in the fridge?
It is not recommended to store cognac in the refrigerator, as the cold can prevent the aromas from expressing themselves fully. However, some connoisseurs prefer enjoy it slightly chilled. In this case, it's better to cool the glass slightly than the bottle itself.
By following these tips, you'll be able to enjoy your cognac to the full and preserve all its aromatic subtleties over time!
